The rules
- Cover every trail on the official list end to end, on foot — run, hike or walk.
- Any order, any number of outings, any starting point. All of your Strava history counts, no time limit.
- Fire roads, trails outside the boundary and neighborhood connector trails don't count. Use them to link trails together.
- A trail counts once your GPS tracks cover at least 80% of it. That absorbs GPS drift under the redwoods.
The boundary
To focus on what most people think of as Tam — Middle Peak, East Peak and its flanks — the challenge stays south of Kent, Alpine, Bon Tempe and Phoenix reservoirs, and north of Highway 1.
Neighborhood trails
Many named and unnamed trails connect local neighborhoods to Tam proper; they're left out. The exception is historic downtown Mill Valley: Zig-Zag, Tenderfoot and Cypress are in.
Where the list comes from
The master list is assembled from Mount Tamalpais Trails by Barry Spitz. Trail lines for matching come from OpenStreetMap.
FAQ
Why isn't this an FKT?
Fastest Known Time records crown whoever is quickest over a fixed route. #EveryTamTrail is about covering a list, in any order, over as long as it takes, so it's closer to peak-bagging than racing. There's no clock.
How does the matching work?
Each trail on the list has a reference line. When you connect Strava, your browser reads your runs, hikes and walks, keeps the ones on Tam, and checks which points along each trail have one of your GPS points within 35 meters. Once 80% of a trail is covered, it counts. A first pass uses Strava's simplified route for speed; then we look at full-detail tracks wherever that could change the answer.
A trail I've definitely run shows as partly done. Why?
Usually GPS drift in steep canyons, a trail that's been rerouted since you ran it, or a gap in the map data. Open the trail to see which part is missing. If the trail line itself looks wrong, let us know.
What do you do with my data?
Nothing leaves your browser. The site reads your activities from Strava, works out your progress on your own device, and saves the result there. There's no account and no database of runners. A small sign-in service exchanges Strava's login code for access, and that's all it sees. Strava's terms also mean your progress is only ever shown to you.
How do I disconnect?
Use "Disconnect Strava" at the bottom of My Progress. That revokes our access with Strava and clears everything this site saved in your browser. You can also revoke access from your Strava settings under My Apps.
Do fire roads count?
No. They're the connective tissue, though — you'll use plenty of them getting between trails.
